The Gift of Christmas

I wrote this song a couple of years ago for our choir to sing at our church. I wanted a song for our choir to sing that talked about what the gift of Christmas really is. Sure it’s a message that’s been told in many songs, but it’s a message that needs to be repeated as often as we can. The point of Christmas isn’t “Presents in bows or wishes for snow, or gifts underneath a tree.” It’s about God himself, becoming a man, bearing the weight of our sin, giving his life, being raised from the dead, covering us with Grace and being with us. That’s the point, God is with us.

So, as you listen to this song, I would just encourage you to be thinking about Christmas, and the amazing gift that it really is.

From what I can gather, this song has been a real blessing to many people in our church and in our choir, and I hope that the same blessing extends to you as well!

The choral parts aren’t on this recording, but they are simple enough to learn along with this recording. The parts that Phil & Danielle sang on the chorus would also make great parts for a “praise team” to sing along with the choir which would really fill out the arrangement!

Patriotic Medley – Piano Instrumental

This past Saturday, my family remembered one of the members of our family. He was a wonderful father, husband, uncle and friend to many. He also served in our armed forces for a period of time, serving part of his time in Korea.

I was honored to be able to play a patriotic medley at his memorial service, and I thought I’d share a recording of that with you. Feel free to pass on the link if you know someone who might enjoy this!

For me, this was one of those songs that was totally inspired by the Holy Spirit. The chorus for the song came in just a few minutes and the rest of the song less than an hour later. Of course I polished it up a bit, but the core of the song stayed the same.

For me, this is a song that encapsulates my day to day worship in light of the pardoning blood that was poured out for me. The lyrics are below the play box below!

Be Thou My Vision

This is an arrangement I did a year or so ago for this Hymn that we all know & love. It’s one that has been arranged many times and in many different ways, but I think this is a new twist to the song. I added a chorus to it, that really helps to create dynamic feeling in the arrangement.

One thing I’ve loved doing for as long as I’ve been involved with worship ministry is rearranging Hymns. A lot of the great Hymns have been rearranged several times, and we have a contemporary version of them that our band already knows – so it would be redundant for me to come up with a new arrangement for one of those.

So, I’ve been looking through my hymnals lately – looking for hymns that I think would be great for us to be using today, but maybe we don’t do them because there isn’t a new arrangement of them. And this is one I came across this week, and was thrilled to arrange.

I also “wrote” a new bridge. The music is mine & half the words are mine, the text of the first half of the Bridge is a rendition of the chorus from “God Leads us Along.”

So, I thought I’d let you hear it. This is a rough recording I did for our band, I’m going to listen to the recordings from our services this weekend and see if one of them is good enough to put up here. But you’ll get the idea.

Rest in Your Peace

I know it’s been forever and a day since I posted anything here. The short reason is it’s complicated. The long story is, well, just ask me in person some-time In the meantime, I thought I’d put up a recording of one of my songs that’s not up here yet. I wrote this song a few years ago. We’ve been using this song as a worship song at our church for a while now, and many people seem to like it – maybe you will too. I just changed the layout a bit, and I still have some work I’m going to do on the song, but you’ll get the idea! Thanks for listening!

The verses are taken from Psalm 121. The chorus came to me first. I was stressed out one day, and I had the thought – what am I stressed about? The Lord is my help and my salvation, whom shall I fear? My help comes from the maker of Heaven and Earth. Then I had the thought if I could just rest in that peace that passes understanding, the peace that comes with the promises of God, I would be much better off. And that’s the way this song came about!

Hey, I just wanted to post something here to let you know that new songs will be coming to the site in the future. Things have been crazy for us for the last couple of months, but I’m hoping to get back into the swing of recording and writing in the next couple of weeks.

Jesus’ Hands (Hymn for the Broken)

Here’s the latest song I’ve been working on. It’s one that’s been on my mind to write for quite some time now. It’s a song that deals with a lot of the emotional situations we go through at some point in our life: Doubt, Guilt, Sickness, & death. It’s kind of like a Hymn, not by the technical definition, but kind of.

I started writing the song after my wife had a miscarriage and we were dealing with the grief of losing our baby. It’s a summary of the places I’ve found comfort from Jesus’ Hands.

Rivers of Love

This is one of my favorites that I’ve written. It seems to be a favorite among others who hear it too. I’m blessed and humbled to get to write music that speaks to the hearts of those who listen to it. I’ve sung this song a couple of times at our church here in Washougal, WA, but I also had the privilege of performing this song at my brother’s church while we were back in the midwest.

The recording is just a scratch recording to get the arrangement idea across to our band at church, but it’s good enough to give you the idea.

Calling Out To You

I wrote this song around Revelation 3:20: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” I wanted to capture the idea of Jesus calling. The idea that he was Calling out to us from outside the door, waiting for us to answer.

We will be using it at our church as the invitation after our Easter Message, and that is how the song would be used the best.
